How Do I Be an Authentic Speaker?
Author and TEDx speaker Brene Brown is one of the most authentic speakers I
If you haven’t listened to her amazing TED talks on vulnerability and shame, you
She defines herself as a “professor-researcher-storyteller-leadership-
She truly has done the inner work and knows herself.
Recently, I finished reading Brene Brown’s book The Quest for True Belonging and
the Courage to Stand Alone: Braving the Wilderness.
Brene Brown quotes the late Maya Angelou (poet and another fav speaker of
mine) for saying the following powerful quote:
“You are only free when you realize you belong no place—you belong
every place—no place at all. The price is high. The reward is great.”
Initially, Brene disagreed with this statement, feeling as though that’s not
experiencing a sense of belonging with others.
In fact, she notes a time when she was scheduled to speak at a high-level stage
with professionals in the audience. She’s wearing her business pants and feels
weird, not like herself.
Prior to speaking, she changes her clothing to a skirt and clogs. Immediately, she
feels at ease, as the self that she is, presenting, connecting, and “being,” earning
her the highest marks for her presentation that day. The audience fully
connected with the “who” she was, her authentic self.
There’s real value in knowing yourself and being yourself when you speak.
The audience doesn’t want anyone but you.
The real you.
How will you be the authentic speaker that you are?
Will it be the choices you make with what you wear?
Will it be the choices you make with what you say?
Will it be the choices you make with how you behave?
Be you, for everyone else is taken.
